Why is Writing So Important to the Success of Any Business?

Words. We talk, we read, we write. We use words without even thinking about them. Yet when somebody specifically mentions writing, many people freeze up not believing they can write. “I'm not a writer!” they say, truly believing it. Does that sound like you?

If you have a business, you need to understand that you are a writer, despite what you think. Writing does not mean just being an author of a book. If you have a web page or a blog, if you write articles and sales page copy or any other form of marketing for your business, you are a writer. If you are a business person, you need to change the perception of yourself by beginning to think of yourself as a writer and realize the importance of the words you use, especially in your business writing.

As you write, the language you select is very important. The words you choose will make a difference in how your reader perceives what you have written. You can dole out information, express your feelings, tell someone what to do, or just converse. You can make a sale or blow a sale just with your choice of words. You can convince, persuade, cajole, plead or entertain with your words. Your language will make people believe in you or think you are not worth the effort. How you communicate, the language you use, will say volumes about you.

Often time, your writing and the language you use is the very first introduction of who you are to your reader. If your use of language, e.g., choice or use of words, spelling, grammar, etc., is incorrect, then you will not be giving out the professional signals you want to send to begin a profitable business relationship with potential clients or customers. You can always become a better wordsmith. But it does take some work.

Here are some suggestions to improve your use of language which will ultimately improve your writing.
Observe and listen to language experts or just good speakers . Listen to the choice of words and how they use them.

  • Read, read and read. Pay attention to the language and how it is used in what you are reading.
  • Keep a dictionary and thesaurus at your side when you are writing, and USE them!
  • Carry a little notebook around with you and write down all the words you hear that you may not be sure of. Then look them up and use them in a sentence to get practice using them.
  • Listen to the classics being read aloud. Listen to how the authors use language.
  • Pay attention to the words you use. Try to use a new word a day in your conversation or writing. Soon you will find that your vocabulary is increasing and your writing improves.
  • Did I mention, read, read and read? The more you read, the more you will find that you just become a better writer and communicator. Language will become more natural to you the more you read.

Many people do not realize the importance of language, or the words they use. As a result, they may not be presenting the best foot forward either personally or for their business. So, take the time to become a better writer by becoming better at the use of words. You will be glad you did!

Managing Fear During Growth Spurts

We all deal with fears, stress and anxiety at times as we expand and grow.  It seems to be a natural part of life and brings our attention to the fact that something is missing for us in that moment.  What is missing during those times is usually a feeling of safety and certainty.

Here are some simple techniques to help create stability and center us during our growth spurts as conscious entrepreneurs.

Break it Down.  When facing new challenges that elicit fear, overwhelm or stress the first thing to do is break it down into a series of small steps. Complete each small step one at a time to make it more manageable and increase your chances of success.

Take a Breath.  Sometimes we get stressed when everything seems to happen all at once. When this occurs, take a deep breath and refocus your mind away from the challenge for a few minutes. Get some fresh air, listen to music, or do an activity that will give you a fresh perspective on the situation.

Visualise.   At times we can experience fearful thoughts that may be hard to manage. Visualize a Red STOP sign to interrupt the negative thought. Take a breath and replace the thought with a positive affirmation eg. ‘I am always given the courage to move through difficult situations and succeed’.

Get the Facts.  When we encounter challenging situations that upset us it is valuable to remember to get all the facts. Gathering the facts prevents us from scaring ourselves with exaggerated and fearful assumptions.  Check out what is real and what is not by asking yourself - ‘Is this real?’, ‘What is the worst that could happen?’ ‘What support could I get to help me with this?’

Re-focus.  We always have a choice to dwell on the negative things in life or choose to focus on all the positive things around us and acknowledge and be grateful for those. As they say ‘Energy flows, where attention goes’. Whatever we focus on expands – choose what you focus on.

Take Action.  Ask - ‘What small action can I take right now that will make me feel in charge?’ then take it.  Taking action gets you moving rather than going round and round in your head, empowering you to move through any fears and anxieties that pop up one step at a time.

Everyone faces fears at some time in their life especially when trying new things, it is normal. Overcoming fears and anxieties is not always easy and might take some hard work and persistence but by using strategies to face, move through and overcome these fears your trust in your own abilities grows along with your self confidence and self belief.

So, you could look at fear as a positive opportunity to grow and expand as it is moving you towards a stronger believe in yourself, how good is that?

Interview with Andrea Hylen Contributing author – Align, Expand and Succeed

1. This book is about conscious business and being a conscious entrepreneur. What does being a conscious entrepreneur mean to you?

Being a conscious business owner means following my intuition, connection to my heart, making a difference in the world and making money to support my family financially.

2. What inspired you to be a contributing author in Align, Expand and Succeed?

There is so much information about the Law of Attraction, visualizing and attracting things but not as much about being in alignment with your dreams and vision. Having a vision board with a fancy car and winning the lottery is not necessarily the thing that will expand your inner growth. I loved the words Align, Expand and Succeed. When you are in alignment with your dreams, you will expand who you are and succeed.

3. Why is the topic of Align, Expand and Succeed important to you?

The most powerful moments in my life have been when I felt in total alignment with a project or event. Money, people, and resources appeared in unexpected ways. Even things like an unexpected inheritance, a fire on my property, a sponsor and more.

4. What does the future hold for you and your books?

Writing has given me clarity about my conscious business. Helping people to transform grief and discover more joy and happiness in every area of life. I know that writing is one of the ways I reach people.

5. What sparks your creativity? Any tips to help others spark their own creativity?

Walking in nature, meditating, listening to inspirational leaders and other conscious business owners.

6. What do you think motivates people to become authors? What motivated you to get into this unusual industry?

I have been a journal writer throughout my life. It is the way I express feelings, ideas and dreams. I have had a variety of experiences that led people to ask me to write about my life. The first book I co-authored is called Conscious Choices: An Evolutionary Woman’s Guide to Life. The experience of writing with 44 women sparked an interest in writing more. I began to blog, as I traveled to 78 Jonas Brothers' concerts with my teenage daughter. That led me to write articles about transforming grief, conscious parenting and creating an e-book club that is launching this fall. The E-book club is designed to help people discover their own inner journey.

7. If a potential reader thinks that your book wouldn't interest them, what would you say to convince them to buy?

With all of the changes happening in the world, we must begin to get different perspectives on building businesses in new ways. The stories in the book will spark new ideas, help you to stay inspired and open to a different way of building a business.

Andrea Hylen is a Minister of Spiritual Peacemaking, a facilitator for people in the ministry program, an Inspiration Coach and co-author of "Conscious Choices: An Evolutionary Woman’s Guide to Life." Her next book "Open to Inspiration: The summer a woman discovered herself with a teenage daughter and the Jonas Brothers on a 10,000 mile road trip" will be published in 2011. Her greatest desire is to inspire people to live a deeper, richer life.
