Whether you are marketing your book or your business, it is important to know how to successfully network at business events. If you have never gone to a business networking meeting before it can be rather intimidating. You will find that many people show up to the event to shake hands and pass out as many of their business cards as possible. Some go and spend all their time with people they already know and it becomes a social event. While you may pick up a bit of business here and there from these methods, neither method helps in being successful in the number one reason for networking- building relationships. And it is the building relationships that leads to quality business.
Your goal of going to a networking event should not be to see how many people you can meet, or how many business cards you can give away, but rather to develop relationships with other people. This will lead to the type and quality of business that you are looking for to grow your business. So, if you want to use networking events to grow your business, here are a few tips to follow at your next networking event:
1. First and foremost, go with the attitude of how you can help other people rather than what’s in it for you.
2. Before you attend an event decide exactly what you can do to help others and what you are looking for. What is your perfect client? What kind of services are you looking for to help grow your business? Be Enthusiastic and Believe in your company while you are finding out how you can help them.
3. Develop relationships with the people you meet. Find out about them. Don’t immediately hand them a business card and give them a presentation about your services. If someone does that to you, think how that makes you feel. Do you really want to do business with someone who is only interested in themselves?
4. Be a good listener. People love talking about themselves and their business. What is their company? What do they enjoy about it? How did they start it? Learning about them will also help you know whether what you offer is a good fit and if not, who you know that you can refer them to.
These are just a few great networking tips. In our next post, we will suggest others that will make you a networking star!
