The Importance of Treating Self Publishing Your Book as a Business

If you are considering self publishing your book you will need to treat it like a business. Publishing your book is more than just writing the book. You will need to consider your budget, marketing plan and find experts to assist you.

  1. Develop a business structure for your business. If you already have a business you could use your business entity for your book but it would be easier to track expenses if you set up a new entity to publish your book.
  2. Develop a business plan.  To develop your business plan you will need to have an idea of how much it will cost to publish your book.  Prices will vary depending on the size of your book and resources you may already have. It is a misconception that publishing a book is free.  Here are some average costs involved in publishing your book. Although you can cut costs in each of the areas you should be aware that to have a quality book you will want to hire consultants in areas that you do not have an expertise.
  3. ISBN#- This is essential if you are going to sell your book on Amazon or in bookstores. A single ISBN# and bar code  from Bowker is $150. If you are planning to make an e-book you will need an additional ISBN# and may want to purchase a block of 10 for $250.
Editing- Editors generally charge per word or page. An average 150 page book will cost approximately between $800 and $2000 depending on the level of editing required.
    Cover design-  $300-$600
    Interior design-  $350-750
Web site- This can range greatly depending on the type of site you want.
Printing costs- Vary depending on size and quantity of books. It can range from $8 per book for quantities under 100 and as little as $1 per book for quantities over 1000.

  4. Have a great marketing plan in place before you start your book. You should already have an online presence so that you will have a following that is interested in purchasing a copy of your book. Define your niche market so that your topic is not too broad. How many books will you need to sell before you make a profit. What are your goals for your book. As an author you will have opportunities that you did not have before. You will be asked to speak to large groups, discuss your area of expertise on the radio and TV. How will you fit this into your marketing plan.

There are many benefits to self-publishing your book. If you want to publish a quality book consider consulting experts to assist you along the way. What are your experiences self publishing? Do you have any suggestions for someone considering publishing a book?
